"More and more, I want to shoot portraits."
says Lionel Deluy. "Its a big change for me. I used to do a lot of shooting where I was farther away from the person, but now i want to get inside."´ Deluy has been photographing Kat Von D for over a year now. As soon as they met, they hit it off, and from the beginning, the process has been collaborative. "She´s beautiful, giving person, and i love working with her because she´s full of a kind of positive energy," says Deluy when describing the star of LA Ink.
The results are some of Deluy´s most interesting portraits to date in a career that has been marked by stunning vision and the ability to create images that go beyond a simple photograph. Deluy was quick to embrace digital technology, and his career has taken off along with the technology. He photographed Kat Von D for the DPP cover with a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II that gives him plenty of resolution to do just about anything he wants to with the photograph.
The photograph is dark by many standards. Thats part of Deluy´s style. "I´m dark and no smiles. This is what i do. I´ve been told that im too dark, but i don't know what this means." He continues, "What´s too dark? I make darker photographs than many, but too dark is just an arbitrary judgment from some people who are used to everything beings shown bright." Like another Los Angeles-based photographer, Patrick Hoelck, Deluy's dark images convey drama and mystery in a way that brighter, more revealing images cant.
For Deluy, the future of photography is the great undiscovered country, and he's eager to take the journey. He becomes visibly excited and animated as he discusses his new collaboration with the Manchester, England, agency Factory 311. "My dream is to do something extraordinary!" He pulls up a YouTube video of an Alexander McQueen fashion show that features a holographic projection of Kate Moss. The audience is entranced as the projection captivates their attention for several minutes, eventually fading from the runway. Deluy talks about the possibilities of 3D and holography and says simply, "I want to be a part of the insane revolution thats coming."
